South America was the last continent that we were able to get up and running again after the Covid pandemic. Some countries there were harder hit than those in Africa or Central Asia, and it took longer for all the borders to re-open fully to allow us to complete our route.
However, our 2023 departure ran all the way from Colombia to Argentina, and back up through Rio to Manaus in Brazil. We learned a lot on that trip with changes being needed to some of our old accommodations and camping spots. We are now ready to go again this year - starting in Cartagena in October and arriving in Rio in time for the Carnival there at the end of February before heading further north into Brazil.
The truck is already fully booked between Santiago and Ushuaia, but we do have some space on the trips listed below. You can also do the full route if you wish, and just jump off to do your own thing for that section.
2025 Updates
From our 2025 departures, we are going to be making some changes to the route, extending it by about 10 days and travelling through both Uruguay and Paraguay on our route between Buenos Aires and Rio.
This will let us visit...
Uruguay: the old cobbled centre of Colonia, the capital Montevideo, the beaches at Punta del Este, and the hot springs and geothermal pools around Salto.
Paraguay: see the ruined Jesuit mission near the village of Trinidad, and explore the capital Asuncion, before entering Brazil at the Iguacu Falls.
This will apply to all affected sections of our Rio to Cartagena trip, starting after Carnival on 4th March 2025. And our also Cartagena to Rio trip starting on 2nd October 2025.
Dates and prices for all our 2025 departures are listed on the website, and the final extended itineraries will be updated soon.
We are also working on the possibility of driving on from Manaus in northern Brazil and through Venezuela to Cartagena. This would let us complete a full circuit of the continent again. Watch this space for more news on that in the next few months.
