Tiwai Island wildlife sanctuary in Sierra Leone

Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, located on the Moa River in Sierra Leone, is a biodiverse haven spanning 12 square kilometers. The sanctuary is renowned for its rich wildlife, including endangered species such as the western chimpanzee and pygmy hippopotamus. Tiwai is also home to over 135 species of birds, 11 species of primates, and numerous reptiles and insects. The island's varied ecosystems—ranging from rainforests to wetlands—offer vital habitats for these species. Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve in Uganda

Most come here for the opportunity to see chimpanzees.  Permits must be booked in advance for the trek into the forest in search of these primates.  Other forest hikes are also available to see the reserve’s wonderful array of monkeys and moths, butterflies and birds and other flora and fauna!

All our overland trips in East Africa on our Grand Adventurer route include an overnight stay at Kalinzu Forest Reserve.  Chimp permits are an additional cost and must be booked in advance.

Another rainforest reserve with incredibly special wildlife such as forest elephants.  Although you would be lucky to see one of these, you can still have an amazing experience, venturing through the tree tops along the canopy walkway.  Look out for parrots and primates and learn about the trees that support the forest’s wildlife.

On all our trips through Namibia, we take you to this fantastic National Park.  Not only can you spot wildlife whilst on game drives in the truck (which gives you an excellent high vantage point!), you can also sit around a floodlit waterhole in the evening to see elephant, giraffe, lion or one of many other species come for a drink.

Opportunity to trek to see Mountain Gorillas.  This is an optional activity and Gorilla trekking permits are an additional cost and must be booked in advance.  An incredible and for most, a once in a lifetime experience!
