Our New Destinations to Visit in South America

Starting from March 2025, our overland trips through South America are going to add in two new countries - Paraguay and Uruguay. Previously travellers have been able to take day trips from Buenos Aires into Uruguay, but we have skipped Paraguay completely.

We will now be travelling through both countries with several stops en-route. A few highlights of what you can see, and trips which visit them, are given below.

Our New Destinations in Uruguay

Uruguay is a small but captivating country often overshadowed by its larger neighbours, known as a coastal paradise with historical charm.

Colonia del Sacramento: Old Town and Cobbled Streets

Stepping into Colonia del Sacramento's Old Town feels like travelling back in time. This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts charming cobblestone streets that wind through a landscape of well-preserved colonial buildings. As you wander through this historical quarter, you will discover hidden plazas, colourful houses with bougainvillea-draped walls, and quaint cafes perfect for a leisurely afternoon.

Don't miss the opportunity to climb the iconic lighthouse for a panoramic view of the historic quarter and the shimmering “Río de la Plata”. The old city gate and wooden drawbridge stand as silent sentinels to the town's rich history, while the ruins of the 17th-century Convent of San Francisco add to the area's mystique.

Montevideo: A Capital of Culture

Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, is a vibrant blend of historical charm and modern energy. In the heart of the city, “Ciudad Vieja” (Old City) is home to art deco and neoclassical buildings as well as the bustling and eclectic “Mercado del Puerto”. This iron structure, built in 1868, is a must-visit for food lovers, offering an array of traditional Uruguayan dishes and “asado” (barbecue grills).

For a taste of local life, take a stroll along “La Rambla”, the world's longest continuous sidewalk. This 22-kilometer promenade hugs the coastline, offering beautiful views and a glimpse into the daily routines of Montevideans. From joggers and locals sipping mate (a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused herbal drink) to fishermen trying their luck, La Rambla embodies the laid-back spirit of the city.

Punta del Este: Beaches and Glamour

Punta del Este, often called the "St. Tropez of South America," is Uruguay's premier beach resort. The town is a peninsula with pristine beaches on both sides: “Playa Mansa” (Calm Beach) on the west and more vibrant “Playa Brava” (Rough Beach) on the east. Playa Brava is home to the famous "La Mano" sculpture, a giant hand emerging from the sand, which has become an iconic symbol of the town.

Beyond the beaches, Punta del Este offers a vibrant nightlife scene. Art enthusiasts should visit the “Casapueblo”, a sprawling white villa-museum created by Uruguayan artist “Carlos Páez Vilaró”. Its unique architecture and stunning sunset views make it a must-see attraction.

Salto: Healing Hot Springs

The city of Salto, in northwestern Uruguay, is famous for its therapeutic hot springs. The Daymán Hot Springs, located just outside the city, offer a rejuvenating experience with pools of varying temperatures. The mineral-rich waters are said to have healing properties, making it a popular destination for both relaxation and health tourism.

The surrounding area is also worth exploring, with its citrus orchards and vineyards. Don't miss the chance to try Salto's famous tangerines, known for their exceptional sweetness.

Our New Destinations in Paraguay

A country less traveled but rich in history and natural beauty, Paraguay offers hidden gems like the colonial architecture of Asunción, the stunning Iguazu Falls, all waiting to be explored.

Trinidad: Ruined Jesuit Monastery

The ruins of the Jesuit mission in Trinidad, Paraguay, offer a fascinating glimpse into South America's colonial past. This UNESCO World Heritage site, dating back to the 17th & 18th centuries, showcases the ambitious scale of the Jesuit project; one of the best-preserved Jesuit ruins in South America. The remains of the church are particularly impressive with its ornate stonework and towering columns, stand as a testament to the craftsmanship of the era.

As you explore the site, you'll find traces of the community that once thrived here, including living quarters, workshops, and agricultural areas. The site is particularly magical at sunset when the reddish stone glows in the fading light.

Asunción: Paraguay's Historic Capital

Asunción, one of South America's oldest cities, blends colonial architectural charm with modern urban life creating a unique cityscape. The city's historic centre is home to several notable buildings, including the “Panteón Nacional de los Héroes”, a national monument and mausoleum dedicated to Paraguay's fallen soldiers and national heroes. Its striking white façade and intricate interior make it a must-visit site.

For a taste of local life and culture, head to the Mercado 4, a sprawling market where you can find everything from fresh produce to traditional crafts. Don't miss the opportunity to try “terere”, Paraguay's national drink, a cold version of mate that's perfect for beating the heat. From Asuncion we will head to the Iguacu Falls and cross into Brazil to continue our trip.
