Last weekend a few of us from Oasis HQ went to an Oasis Overland Trans Africa reunion in Herefordshire. My name is Linda and 10 years ago this 10th November myself and 47 others set off on 2 Oasis trucks, (Gunga & Fanny) on a 29 week overland adventure around Africa. We left the UK destined for Cape Town exploring 27 countries on the way. Little did we know that it would be a life changing experience in more ways than one.
I would meet a guy to which I am now engaged to be married to and would make some of the most wonderful friends ever. We experienced so many things together and for me and many of the others it was one of the most memorable experiences we have ever had and we treasure the friendships that this adventure brought us.
So earlier this year an amazing lady from our trip called Hannah came up with this great idea of a reunion and set about the huge task of organising a 10 year celebration. So about 24 of us from all over the UK descended on a large converted barn in Herefordshire. Sadly not all of the group could make it as they are dotted around the world, but we were thinking of them when we reminisced about the days on our trip. We brought photos and DVD’s of our trip and exchanged many fond memories. We were amazed that everyone still looked the same as they did 10 years ago, apart from our clothes were much cleaner than our trans days. The accommodation and facilities were different too to those of our trip days. We cooked on big gas stoves rather than a camp fire, had the luxury of a dishwasher, central heating, hot showers and we all slept in lovely comfortable beds.
Since we left our Trans Africa trip there have been many engagements, weddings and even quite a few new editions made to some families which is lovely, as the group is now forever growing. Thank you Hannah and to everyone that was there for making it such a wonderful and memorable weekend. I wonder where we will all be in another 10 years?
This was the brochure page from our Trans Africa Trip in 2002-2003 and the route we took.
Since my Trans Africa trip I am lucky to have been part of the team at Oasis HQ for the majority of the time and I am about to witness the next Trans Africa truck departing on another adventure filled trip. I have seen many travellers embark on the same adventure as us and I have heard about many groups catching up and keeping in touch over the years with their own reunions. We would love to see your photos and videos of your trip and share your experiences with us.
